Service Learning Day Reflection
Our Service Learning Project was on Haunted House. Through this project, 1e6 was more bonded. Some students helped to decorate the haunted house while others contributed by becoming the ghosts. I too was also one of the ‘ghosts’. My job was very simple. It was just to stick out my hands whenever a visitor walks past us. However, little did my friends who had the same job as me and I to think that that people actually would hit us when they are scared. One of my friends, Jasmine Tay, was hit by a book that a girl was holding!!! She was very angry but tolerated as if she were to scream her head off, they would know how we operate the haunted house.
People also used their cameras and turned on flash to snap a shot!! It was so glaring that it hurt our eyes!! I feel that the people are very inconsiderate as I later knew that they did this out of ‘fun’.
Not everything went well, among four of our air-conditioners, only two were to be switched on in order to save electricity and caused almost all the ghosts feel so stuffy!! Our water supply was also cut off to save ‘water bills’! This caused two of my other friends, Sheena and Germaine to have to climb up and down the stairs to collect water for the dry ice as our haunted house is being held in the CD shelter.
However, despite these incidents, I still enjoyed the whole thing. We earned a total of $364 at the end of the day!! When we are supposed to clear the haunted house to the original CD shelter, everyone was so sad and could not bear to tear down the ‘house’.
After this project, I learnt that team work is very important as without everyone contributing, the haunted house would also be that successful!!! I also learnt care and compassion as when one of our classmates was hurt, we were all very concerned about her and cared for her. We must also have fortitude or else we would not able to achieve such great results. If we were to just give up easily when we did not have water supply, we may not have the effect as good as using dry-ice. Another example is when we were to give up when we were hit by others while doing our jobs, we would not have any ghosts left in the haunted house!!
I will always remember this quote by Miss Tan Chye, ‘Whether you had any profit is not that matters. What really matters is the process you had gone through.’
