Reflection on Service Learning Day – 21st May 2007
Monday, 21st May was an exciting day for all secondary one students as it was Service Learning Day. Each class had to set up a stall and raise funds, with the help of our fellow schoolmates, to donate to an organization that we chose.
Our class decided to set up a haunted house in the CD shelter. I could see that many of our classmates were looking forward to it. I made a poster for publicity. Two days before the actual day, many of us came back to school to help out in setting up the haunted house despite the fact that it was a Saturday. Although it was tiring, fun and laughter made it all better. I had left the school before the completion of the haunted house for I had tuition that day. I would have stayed longer if I could. I felt that I did not help out enough as I only stayed for a little while. I wondered if the haunted house could be completed in time as I thought that we had very little time left.
However, on Monday, I felt that the others did a great job on setting up and completing the haunted house. After morning assembly, the whole class went down to the CD shelter for last minute preparations, before our real customers arrived.
As the lights were switched off and we were in our positions, the doors opened and students started coming in.
I could hear screams, which kind of hurt my eardrums and it made it creepier for me. I was stationed at the lamp area and I had to switch on the lamp when students walked past it. I was quite afraid of the dark and the mannequin hanging behind me made it worst. I comforted myself by telling myself that it everything was not real. After awhile, I got used to it and even found it funny when our customers screamed. I switched roles with Sheena, who was making the sound effects.
After school, we even opened for another hour to earn more profit. It was really tiring as we were sweating non-stop. However, our efforts paid off as we earned a big profit.
That day was a fulfilling one. I was proud of our class as all of us had contributed a little bit and I could feel the class spirit we had formed. I learnt about responsibility of our own roles. Also, without everyone’s hard work and effort, this project would not be successful. I look forward to more projects like this in the near future.
